About this Course

Studying this course gives the knowledge of working in a Veterinary Practice needed to work as a support assistant and help with everyday handling and care of animals that require treatment by a vet.

Certification

To complete this Veterinary Support Assistant Level 3 course you will need to submit, and pass, all of the tutor marked assignments. There are six assignments in the course and no need to purchase any textbooks as we provide all of the lessons and materials required to learn the syllabus. All assignments are coursework based and are in an essay/question and answer style to test your knowledge of the topics covered in each of the course sections.

Course Content

This course assesses the following units:

Unit 1: Roles in animal care

In the first unit of this course we will look at the different roles which people play within a veterinary practice and the difference between each.

This unit will teach you about:

• Veterinary nurses and surgeons
• Legislation in veterinary practice
• Student nurses and volunteers
• Animal welfare

Unit 2: Animal physiology

In this unit we will look at the different systems within the vast majority of living mammals such as the respiratory, cardiovascular and digestive system. We will also look at the cell structure of animal cells, which make up all the different parts of the body and are the building blocks for life.

This unit will teach you about:

• Animal cells
• The nervous system
• Bodily systems

Unit 3: Health and safety

In this unit we will explore the various different health and safety issues that could come into effect in your work and the legislative codes which must be followed to stay safe at all times.

This unit will teach you about:

• Health and safety basics
• Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
• Accidents
• Carcinogens, mutagens and biological agent exposure
• Legislation

Unit 4: Testing for diseases

Knowing how to correctly sanitise equipment and areas that you work in will cause this risk to be reduced and ensure that all animals in the practice are kept safe from infection. Veterinary surgeries should be cleaned and sanitised as often as possible to reduce this risk, and in this unit we will look at ways to do this and why it is so important.

This unit will teach you about:

• Laboratory practices
• Accident and emergencies
• Making samples
• Carrying out tests
• Analysing results

Unit 5: Disease prevention

It may be that, as a veterinary support assistant, you are required to carry out certain tasks such as laboratory tests on animals to discover what type of treatment they require. Being able to do this safely and reducing the amount of stress placed on the animal is of the upmost importance, and you will need to be able to carry out certain procedures which we will explore in this unit of the course.

Having a good understanding of the different tests that may be carried out and why these are of benefit will help you to quickly find the cause of a problem and administer the correct treatment.

This unit will teach you about:

• Animal infection
• Maintaining cleanliness
• Disinfectants

Unit 6: Drugs for animals

This unit covers the necessary legislation and principles which you need to adhere to in order to safely administer medication to animals who need this additional care to improve their wellbeing. Upon completion of this unit you should have a much clearer understanding of the need for correct procedures and stock management in order to treat illnesses safely and in accordance with EU and UK laws.

This unit will teach you about:

• Managing drugs
• The misuse of drugs act
• Administering drugs

This course can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.

To pass this course learners must pass 6 assignments. These are completed after navigating through the corresponding lessons and writing your answers to assignment questions.
