You will discover in this unit how behaviour can be supported through the use of various behaviour management strategies and interventions, as well as the advantages of proactive support for children who display distressed behaviour. Topics in this unit include:
- Understand strategies that can support children showing distressed behaviour
- Understand how to record incidents when working with children who display distressed behaviour
- Understand how to mitigate distressed behaviour in children
- Understand when physical intervention should be used and the importance of using physical intervention safely when a child is displaying distressed behaviour
Unit 3: Distressed behaviour and mental health in children
This unit will explain some of the most common mental health problems and how they are recognised, with various signs and symptoms for each one being identified. Topics in this unit include:
- Understand the characteristics of mental health
- Understand how to support children with a mental health condition displaying distressed behaviour
Unit 4: Distressed behaviour and learning disabilities in children
This unit will explain some of the most common learning disabilities and how they are identified, as well as various behavioural characteristics for each one. Topics in this unit include:

Unit 5: Distressed behaviour, sensory processing conditions and autism spectrum conditions in children

- Understand the characteristics of sensory processing conditions and autism spectrum conditions
- Understand how to support children with an autism spectrum condition displaying distressed behaviour
- Understand how to support children with a sensory processing condition displaying distressed behaviour
Unit 6: Legislation and guidance for an individual providing support to children displaying distressed behaviour
In this unit, you will learn about the legislation that underpins support approaches, human rights of children and inclusion. Topics in this unit include:
- Understand legislation relevant to distressed behaviour in children
- Understand wider support available when working with children who display distressed behaviour
- Understand how UK legislation can support the human rights of children who display distressed behaviour
