You will then cover how infections are transmitted and the difference between direct and indirect transmission.

The unit will then explain improvements that can be made in hygiene practice, such as personal hygiene, cleaning procedures and environmental interventions. You will explore effective handwashing routines and techniques and how you can facilitate children using effective handwashing practices.

The unit will outline how to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to reduce the spread of infection. You will then learn about the proper procedures for handling and disposing of waste, including waste which contains bodily fluids. Finally, the unit will outline the safe process of sterilising feeding equipment and preparing formula feeds for babies up to 12 months old.

Unit 2 – Understanding health emergencies and health conditions in early years settings

During this unit, you will develop your understanding of the potential accidents and health conditions in early years settings. You will also learn your role in managing accidents, health conditions and allergies. To begin, we will explore the five most common causes of unintentional harm that may occur in early years settings. We will then discuss how early years practitioners should deal with some of the most common accidents that can occur. This will include managing bruising to the head, minor burns or scalds and choking.

You will then explore how acute and chronic health conditions may be managed in early years settings. The unit will describe acute and chronic health conditions and the relationships between the two. We will discuss your role concerning caring for and managing babies and young children with asthma, epilepsy, eczema and diabetes. We will expand this knowledge and explore how to recognise and treat acute complications of these chronic conditions. We will also cover how you can facilitate young children in managing their own health conditions, including working in partnership with parents, carers and health professionals to manage their chronic health conditions.

Finally, you will learn about food intolerances and common allergies in childcare. The unit will describe common symptoms of allergic reactions and how these should be treated to avoid harm.

Unit 3 – Policies and procedures relating to safe and healthy environments for babies and young children

During this unit, you will gain an understanding of how legislation informs the provision of a safe and healthy early years environment. The unit will also explore how policies and procedures in early years settings support a safe and healthy environment, including policies that protect children with known allergies. We will discuss the policies that inform the proper recording of healthcare treatment.

The unit will then focus on the statutory guidance that must be followed in early years settings and how this guidance relates to serious accidents and notifiable diseases. You will then learn how accidents in early years should be recorded and reported to comply with statutory guidance.

You will also learn the importance of health initiatives for babies, young children and their families.

Unit 4 – Knowledge of common childhood illnesses

In this final unit, we will explore common childhood illnesses at the early years stage. The unit will describe the signs and symptoms of an unwell baby or child. We will then discuss some common childhood illnesses and cover the symptoms and causes of each of these illnesses.

The unit will then outline some of the sources of information available to gain information and support regarding common childhood illnesses.
