NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills

Included in this NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills course are the following units:

Unit 1 – Developing counselling skills

In this unit, you will learn about the process involved in establishing a counselling relationship and how to manage the helping interaction once this relationship has been established to keep those involved safe and supported. You will learn how to determine the skills necessary for concluding a counselling skills interaction so that you can analyse the benefits of the interaction with individuals in a helping relationship and evaluate the outcome of the relationship. Finally, you will learn how self-reflection can improve the use of counselling skills and be able to explain how feedback and guidance can improve the use of counselling skills before learning how to evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses in using counselling skills.

Unit 2 – Theoretical approaches in the use of counselling skills

In this unit we will explain the characteristics and concepts of three key counselling theories and you will be given the opportunity to evaluate them. You will learn about the role of theory in relation to helping relationships and be able to demonstrate how to apply core theories when using counselling skills. You will learn how to assess the impact of applying core theory to interactions and then reflect on ways in which the study of counselling theory has developed your understanding of yourself, which will enable you to explain how this informs your own approach to counselling.

Unit 3 – Working ethically with counselling skills

In this unit you will learn how to explain the key features of a recognised ethical framework for counselling and be able to compare this with that of another professional body or organisation. You will learn how to compare different contexts where counselling skills are used and subsequently be able to explain issues that impact on the use of counselling skills in different settings. You will learn how to explain what is meant by ethical referral and why such a referral may be needed and what referral processes are in this context. Finally, you will learn when, how and why confidentiality and boundaries may be breached.

Unit 4 – Counselling skills and diversity

In this unit you will learn how to explain ways in which people experience discrimination and to evaluate your own experiences or observations of possible discrimination. You will also gain knowledge of how to assess how diversity impacts on the counselling relationship and how to analyse examples from your own experience where you have encountered issues of difference/diversity. Finally, you will learn about the legal aspects of anti-discriminatory practice.

Unit 5 – Counselling skills and personal development

In this unit you will learn how you identify your own personal development needs and how to explain the importance of continued self-development for a time when you are using counselling skills. You will learn about the importance of personal development in counselling skills practice and how feedback contributes to the process of personal development. You will learn how to evaluate your own counselling skills practice and how your own development has been influenced by this. You will also look at barriers to personal development and self-awareness.

Practical skills and reflection

The final part of your course will be to conduct a practical counselling session. After the session you will need to reflect on this and analyse the session to be able to work on your counselling skills to improve for further sessions.
