About this Course

Choosing to study our Nutrition and Health Award can act your first stepping stone to changing the way you view and interact with food. With 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children predicted to be obese by 2050 (by the Foresight Study); the information supplied on this course will enable you to combat this growing epidemic and reduce the number of individuals who are missing work; becoming ill or who are going into care due to obesity. From uncovering the link between unhealthy diets and lifestyle diseases, to being able to calculate the correct nutritional intake/energy requirements for each age group (child to adults); this award will help to expand your existing knowledge and understanding on this subject, so you can effectively identify which foods are great energy sources; plan balanced meals for the family, and recognise the roles of nutrients and how they can encourage a healthier lifestyle. On top of this, you’ll acquire skills that are easily transferrable into the workplace. Skills that will enable you to identify/deal with a range of special dietary requirements as well as explore a career working within food, health and the care of children and older individuals.

Qualification

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Level 2 NCFE CACHE Certificate of Achievement. This means the course has been independently accredited at a level of learning that is equivalent to Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In addition, this means that this learning programme has undergone extensive reviews and examinations; has been approved by an independent panel of experienced educational professionals, and is quality audited biannually by the NCFE. NCFE is nationally recognised as an awarding body by the qualification regulators (‘regulators’) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Course Content

This course assesses the syllabus taught on the following three units:

Unit 1: Explore Principles of Healthy Eating

In this unit, you will learn what a healthy diet is and the difference between the healthy diets of adults and children. You will learn about sources of energy from food, what BMR and PAL are and how to calculate these. You will learn about nutrients and healthy eating advice and, finally, you will learn about planning and preparing food for a variety of groups of people.

Unit 2: Consider Nutritional Needs of a Variety of Individuals

In this unit, you will learn how to plan balance meals and snacks for a day our chosen age group and you will be able to explain why the meals and snacks that you have chosen are appropriate. You will learn about the factors that influence the eating patterns of various age groups as well as what kind of energy requirements these age groups will need.

Unit 3: Use Food and Nutrition Information to Plan a Healthy Diet

In this unit, you will learn about nutritional information which must be provided on food labels and the guideline daily amounts of fat, sugar and salt in an adult daily diet. You will also learn how to compare the nutritional information from three different food labels and determine if each of the foods is high, low or neither in terms of fat, sugar and salt content. You will learn how to use nutritional information from food labels to calculate the energy provided by fat, protein and carbohydrate in each food and about ways in which food label claims and descriptions may be misleading.

Assessments

To gain this Level 2 RQF Award in Nutrition and Health, you will need to complete a series of set assignments that are designed to test your knowledge of the course units. These will need to be passed onto your personal tutor for marking, before being moderated by the NCFE. In addition, you will need to complete the NCFE candidate workbook (in conjunction with the information and exercises supplied within the learning materials). These too will be marked by your tutor before being returned with a list of valuable tips and feedback which can be used to improve your grades on future assignments.

Enrolment Length
