About this Course

This course is specifically designed to give a good overview of the knowledge required to start a career as a nail technician and the different techniques that this job role requires. The units are tailored to those who wish to not only learn practical skills but people who wish to one day launch their own business or set up a nail salon.

Certification

To complete this Nail Technician Level 3 course you will need to submit, and pass, all of the tutor marked assignments. There are seven assignments in the course and no need to purchase any textbooks as we provide all of the lessons and materials required to learn the syllabus. All assignments are coursework based and are in an essay/question and answer style to test your knowledge of the topics covered in each of the course sections.

Course Content

This course assesses the following units:

The Anatomy of the Skin and Nails

In this unit of the course we will explore the anatomy of the skin and what it is for, as well as some of the more common skin abnormalities which can affect the health and well-being of a person’s skin.

This unit will teach you to:

• Understand the anatomy of the skin
• Appreciate the different jobs which the skin carries out and how this helps to regulate the body
• Be able to identify certain skin diseases and inflictions that are most common
• Understand the bone structure of the hands and feet
• Describe the structures of nails and the different areas which you, as a nail technician, will need to care for
• Describe symptoms of various abnormalities including carpal tunnel syndrome
• Understand the main reasons for discolouration of nails

Manicures and Pedicures

In this unit we will explore the need for manicures and how to carry these out correctly using the proper practices that are required by nail technicians.

This unit will teach you to:

• Describe key aspects of manicures and pedicures
• Understand how to perform manicures and pedicures
• Identify correct procedures when performing manicures and pedicures
• Understand how to communicate with clients so that they feel valued

Nail Compositions

Throughout this lesson we will be focusing on the structure of the nail and its composition. We will look at the different strengths of nails and how a healthy nail should grow.

This unit will teach you to:

• Understand the growth of the nail and different conditions that can affect nails
• Identify different treatable and untreatable conditions
• Understand what is meant by nail enhancements

Nail Tips

In this part of the course we will be looking at the various types of nail tips and adhesives that can be used to add enhancements to your clients’ nails.

This unit will teach you to:

• Understand the different types of tips which can be added to nails
• How to prepare and apply nail tips to clients
• Know the different molecules that are at work
• Know how to apply nail tips in a step by step process

Overlays

In this unit we will explore the use of nail overlays and the various types in use, which are liquid and powder, UV gel and fibre overlays. Each of these has their own pros and cons and we will look at each in detail and the correct method of application.

This unit will teach you to:

• Understand the different types of overlays which can be added to nails
• How to prepare and apply nail tips to clients specifications
• The different molecules that are at work
• Know how to apply nail tips in a step by step process

Health and Safety

Without the correct procedures for the disposal of waste products and chemicals, as well as the general cleanliness of the salon, you could run the risk of having bacteria and infection spreading. This could be to you, the others who work with you or your clients, and you should always analyse situations to make sure that you are working in the most hygienic way.

This unit will teach you to:

• Understand the requirements of working day to day in a nail salon and keeping up with the health and hygiene requirements
• Understand how to properly sterilise equipment so that it is sanitary
• Describe the various needs when working in a salon to keep the area clean and minimise the spread of bacteria
• Correctly dispose of waste materials and chemicals

Starting your own Nail Technician business

This unit of the course will focus on how to start your own business and the best practices for when you are running a company.

This unit will teach you to:

• Discuss various laws which need to be considered when starting your own business
• Identify any documentation that needs to be completed in order to launch a company
• Describe ways in which you can market yourself and your company in order to attract clients
• Describe financial information that must be submitted to HMRC for you to be classed as self-employed and pay the necessary taxes

Assessments

To pass this course learners must pass 7 assignments. These are completed after navigating through the corresponding lessons and writing your answers to assignment questions.
