About this Course

Forensic science is defined as the application of science and its principles to the law and justice system. There are some types of forensic scientists whom travel to the scene to collect the evidence themselves, whilst there are others who occupy a purely laboratory role, analysing objects brought to them by other personages. While both prosecution and defence can call on the same or differing Forensic Evidence in trial, it is primarily used by the prosecution. Evidence is findings or opinions usually formatted as a formal statement or as a report. Due to the nature of their position, forensic scientists are expected to uphold a high level of integrity and maintain strict ethical guidelines regarding their work therefore all Forensic Evidence is subject to the rules and regulations of The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. Forensic science is used in the examination of physical traces left behind after a crime i.e. hair, blood which can help establish a link between a criminal and the crime. Yet there are many other sectors in which you can specialise i.e. firearms, explosives, and providing insight into the cause of a fire or a road accident. Forensic scientists have also been known to visit a crime scene in person to aid investigators in discovering the sequence in which events have occurred based on physical evidence such as blood patterns or gunpowder residue. Other forensic scientists will be able to scrutinise drug/alcohol abuse and/or poisoning. This course will teach you why continuity and the chain of evidence is so important in trials and convictions.

In this unit, we will unravel the ethical considerations, investigative techniques and challenges inherent in the field of digital forensics.

Unit 5: Forensic Psychology

This unit delves into the multifaceted role of forensic psychology in criminal investigations, exploring its applications, challenges and the pivotal impact it has on the legal landscape.

Unit 6: Forensic Anthropology and Odontology

This unit delves into the intricate methodologies and challenges associated with identifying individuals and interpreting trauma in diverse forensic scenarios.

Unit 7: Criminalistics and Trace Evidence

This unit takes you through the critical analysis of forensic principles, delving into the intricate processes of analysing physical evidence, reconstructing crime scenes, and interpreting forensic findings.

Unit 8: Expert Witness Testimony and Professional Practice

This unit navigates the multifaceted role of forensic scientists as expert witnesses, delving into the complexities of courtroom testimony, ethical considerations, and the evolving landscape of forensic science.

To pass this course learners must complete a number of assignments. These are completed after navigating through the lessons which are sent to students and writing your answers to assignment questions.
