Course Content

This course assesses the following units:

Unit 1 – Biology of the horse

This unit explores the evolution and domestication of the horse throughout the years, and looks at the equine body, from the skeleton to key joints and muscles which allow movement at speed. It demonstrates how a horse’s heart plays an important role in performance, how the hooves act as a means of blood circulation, and how teeth give insight into a horse’s age and history through evolution. It also looks at the healthy horse — the signs an animal is in good health, and conversely what to look for in a horse in poor condition.

Unit 2 – Buying and owning a horse

This unit runs through the day-to-day maintenance of owning a horse, teaching the elements of a grooming kit and how to use them, how to interpret the body language of a horse, and essential knowledge such as stabling and feeding. The unit also explores the equine colour spectrum, and how genetics determine the potential colour of a foal, as well as looking into the many breeds and their suitability.

Unit 3 – Turning out, stabling and tack

This unit explains the dangers of poisonous plants and how to spot them, as well as what to look for when selecting a pasture for a horse. The unit also demonstrates the variety of equipment used in the equine industry, from saddles and bridles to the clothing of the everyday rider, and how to maintain a happy horse through stable upkeep and enrichment.

Unit 4 – Exercising and training

Unit 4 explores the gaits of a horse, from the walk to the gallop, and breed-specific gaits such as the tölt. It demonstrates the correct way to mount and dismount a horse, as well as the safest manner in which to lead a horse from the ground. This unit offers insight into the cues given from rider to horse, how to transition correctly between gaits when in the saddle, and how to progress into extending or collecting gaits when training. It also explores the uses of lunging, the equipment needed for a successful training session, and their purposes.

Unit 5 – Equine health

This unit focuses on health conditions commonly seen in horses, from the more serious disorders to parasite infections. The unit describes symptoms to watch out for, such as the depression and rolling seen with colic, and the ways in which these diseases may be treated by a veterinarian. It explores different categorisations of disease, for example the three subgroups of lymphangitis, and explains the effect these diagnoses have on the prognosis of the afflicted animal.

Unit 6 – Foaling

Unit 6 explores the reproductive cycle of the horse, from conception to the three trimesters of pregnancy, and the birth of a foal. It demonstrates what to look for when observing a birth, and warning signs that something may be wrong. This unit shares the ways in which a body condition score can be used to determine whether a mare’s pregnancy is progressing safely, and how the weight of a horse affects fertility — including the natural changes that can be expected as an unborn foal grows.
