Working with people that suffer from addiction can be very challenging for counsellors and this course is perfect to learn the necessary skills that should be employed in this role. The course covers many different counselling types and explains ways of working with people that suffer from addiction in order to rehabilitate and tackle their issues.

Certification
To gain the Drugs, Solvents and Alcohol Abuse Counselling Level 3 you will need to submit and pass all of the tutor marked assignments. There are 6 assignments in the course and no need to purchase any textbooks as we provide all of the lessons and materials required to learn the syllabus. There is no formal exam and the certification fee is included in the course fees.

This course assesses the following units:
Unit 1: Counselling relationships and dependence
In this unit we will look at this relationship in detail, learn about different approaches that can be adopted and look at a number of reasons why people become addicted to substances in the first place.

- Counselling theories and approaches
- Approaches to counselling
- Exploring dependence
- Why do people become addicted?
- Counselling ethics
Unit 2: Working with alcohol abusers
This unit will cover the use of alcohol and how to work with alcohol abusers.
This unit will cover:
- Alcohol abuse
- Factors influencing consumption of alcohol
- Working with alcoholics
- Approaches to dealing with alcohol misuse
- Cycle of change model
- Specific issues with alcohol misusers
Unit 3: Working with substance misusers
In this chapter we will explore substances and drugs which you may come across when working with drug abusers, the affects that they have and the classifications of each.
This unit will cover:
- The effects of substance misuse
- The brain and central nervous system
- Drug laws
- Counselling substance misusers
- How to tackle substance abuse situations
Unit 4: Person-centred approaches to misuse counselling
In this unit we will explore how these can be used when working with substance abusers.
This unit will cover:
- Carl Rogers
- Maslows hierarchy of needs
- Existential approaches
- Pros and cons of the person-centred approach
Unit 5: Psychodynamic approaches to misuse counselling
In this unit we will look at psychodynamic approaches to counselling and how these are affective when working with substance misusers.
This unit will cover:
- Psychodynamic approach theory
- Carl Jung
- Object relations theory
- Psychodynamic theory
- Limitations of the approach
Unit 6: Cognitive approaches to misuse counselling
This unit of the course will focus on person-centred approaches to counselling drug and alcohol abusers.
Throughout this unit we will explore different theorists that have contributed to this approach as well as the good and bad points of using this form of counselling with substance misusers.
This unit will cover:
- Cognitive approach theory
- Social learning theory
- Behaviour and learning reviews
- Cognitive behavioural therapy
This course can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.

Assessments
