Upon completion of this qualification, students are awarded a CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health certificate and an OLC Certificate. All certification fees are included in your course fees. This qualification is suitable for a range of different career paths in settings such as:

Qualification
This is a knowledge only qualification. Experience in the real work environment is not required and the entire course is completed online. Please note that this is a knowledge only Level 2 qualification and does not require any practical assessments. This course requires students to pass 5 tutor marked assignments. The qualification can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.

Included in this CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health course are the following units:
Unit 1 – Understand children and young people’s mental health in context
This section covers the general concept of mental health and how this differs from mental ill-health. You will learn about the prevalence of mental health problems in children and young people and what current legislation and guidance are in place to support them. You will also learn about what it means to have a duty of care and how the portrayal of mental health has changed over time and what this has done to people’s attitudes towards it.

Unit 2 – Understand factors which may affect children and young people’s mental health
This section will support your understanding of some of the risk factors which may impact the mental health of children and young people. This will include specific consideration of how mental health may be affected by bullying, abuse and developmental changes.

- Understand the potential effects of puberty and developmental changes on the mental health of children and young people
- Understand how abuse or bullying may affect the mental health of a child or young person
Unit 3 – Understand children and young people’s mental health concerns
This section looks at some of the ways in which a mental health problem can present itself in the behaviour of children and young people and it examines some of the different kinds of mental health problem that can develop in any child or young person.

- Understand stress and anxiety in children and young people
- Understand depression in children and young people
- Know about specific mental health conditions that children and young people may experience
Unit 4 – Understand the impact of children and young people’s mental health concerns
This section considers how a mental health concern can affect children, young people and others. It will examine some of the short and long-term effects of mental health issues and some of the problems associated with diagnosing mental health issues and why some barriers to this exist.

Unit 5 – Understand how to support children and young people with mental health concerns
This section looks at what is meant by a person-centred approach to care and support and then considers how children’s rights are upheld when they have a mental health problem. There is also a discussion of some of the ways in which children and young people can be supported to remain in a nurturing environment and what some of the most common forms of therapy and medication are, which may be suggested if a child is diagnosed with a type of mental health problem.
